Sometimes, when I wake up and begin my day, one simple question comes to mind:
“What should I eat today?”
At first, it sounds like nothing more than choosing a meal. But if we think about it a little differently, it may be a much deeper question.
What does my body need today?
What is my heart craving?
And what kind of food will help me get through this day?
Some days, I want something warm and comforting.
A bowl of hot soup with rice can make the noise in my head quiet down for a moment. With the first spoonful of warm broth, my body begins to relax, and somehow my heart feels a little calmer too.
Other days, I crave meat.
After a long day of physical work or constant movement, it almost feels as if the body itself is asking for protein and energy. A piece of well-cooked meat with a spoonful of rice can feel like a small reward for everything the day demanded.
And then there are days when I do not want anything heavy.
Maybe fruit, a simple salad, or a warm cup of tea is enough. On those days, I do not need food to fill me completely. I need food that allows my body to rest.
So lately, instead of simply asking, “What should I eat?” I have been trying to ask myself a different question:
“What will nourish me today?”
To be nourished means more than having a full stomach.
Food can fill us with memories.
A familiar soup or stew can suddenly bring back the smell of home and memories of meals someone once made for us.
Food can also fill the empty spaces between people.
Sometimes a simple conversation shared across a dinner table gives us more comfort than a long explanation ever could.
And food can fill the heart.
After a difficult day, a warm meal can almost feel like someone saying,
“You made it through today.”
Of course, food cannot solve every problem.
But good food can make us stop for a moment.
When we slow down, chew, taste, and feel the warmth of a meal, we return to ourselves for a few quiet minutes.
So when choosing what to eat today, we do not always need to look for something famous, expensive, or extraordinary.
Maybe we only need something our body is asking for, something that brings comfort to our heart, and something that leaves us feeling just a little better when we get up from the table.
That may be enough.
So what will nourish you today?
Maybe it is a bowl of hot soup.
Maybe it is a slice of freshly baked bread.
Or maybe it is simply an ordinary dinner shared with someone you love.
Perhaps good food is not always about eating something special.
Perhaps it is simply about eating what today’s version of you truly needs.
